October 1, 2021 marked the 50th anniversary of the opening of Walt Disney World, which had a huge impact on Florida and national tourism. One of the neglected areas of study is the role the on-site resorts played in the evolution of WDW over the last fifty years. Following Walt Disney’s own zeal to create a true “Vacation Kingdom,” the various resorts were specifically designed to provide visitors uniquely-themed worlds where they could stay while visiting WDW: Contemporary (futuristic), Polynesian Village (the South Seas), Wilderness Lodge (America's National Parks), Grand Floridian (Victorian elegance), BoardWalk Inn (Atlantic City of the 1920s) and Animal Kingdom Lodge (African wildlife). Explore these “Worlds Within the World” with author Brian Rucker during this free program accentuated by an extensive and fun PowerPoint presentation.
Dr. Brian Rucker is a seventh-generation Floridian who earned his Ph.D. in history from FSU and has authored and edited over 50 books and articles related to the Panhandle. He teaches history at Pensacola State College, and also teaches a course on the history of the Florida Panhandle at the University of West Florida. Dr. Rucker is currently President of the Gulf South Historical Association and will be in charge of this year's conference in Natchez, Mississippi.
This event is part of the Niceville Library's Adult Summer Reading Program and is presented in partnership with the Friends of the Niceville Library.
